G. Watts Humphrey Jr.’s ONE CAROLINE (Unbridled’s Song) maintained her
undefeated status in Sunday’s $150,000
Rampart
S. (G2), striking the front soon after the start and coasting through one
lap of Gulfstream Park’s 1 1/8-mile oval. The Rusty Arnold trainee was always in
complete control through splits of :23 1/5, :46 3/5 and 1:10 4/5, and under very
modest handling by Edgar Prado, finished off nine panels in 1:48 4/5 over a
track labeled good. The 3-5 choice returned $3.40, $2.60 and $2.10 for her 6
1/2-length triumph.
Sea Chanter (War Chant), making her first dirt appearance, repelled a
challenge from Canadian champion Ginger Brew (Milwaukee Brew) for runner-up
honors, finishing two lengths clear of that rival at 26-1. She paid $9.40 and
$4.60 while completing the $49.40 exacta. Ginger Brew, the 2-1 second choice,
brought back $2.40 and finished the $105 trifecta. She was 4 1/2 lengths clear
of Striking Tomisue (Smart Strike), who capped the 3-5-1-6 superfecta worth
$407. Hamsa (Fusaichi Pegasus), African Violet (Lemon Drop Kid) and So Glitzy
(Gilded Time) rounded out the order of finish.
“She’s going to have to figure out not to go right from the gate,” Arnold
said. “Once she got in front today, she handed him (Prado) the bit and
everything was good, but she needs to know that, if somebody outbreaks here, or
somebody sends a ‘rabbit,’ we’re going to have to get her back.
“If she’s all right she’ll run on Oaks Day at Churchill Downs (the May 1
Louisville Distaff [G2]).”
One Caroline broke her maiden last May at Churchill Downs by a length, then
returned a month later to add an allowance to her line by 6 3/4 lengths. That
was her same margin of victory when reappearing seven months later on January 15
in a Gulfstream Park allowance/optional claimer. Last time she took the one-mile
Sabin S. (G3) by a length. With this score, the gray pushed her career earnings
to $226,396.
Bred in Kentucky by Payson Stud Inc., One Caroline is out of the
stakes-winning Powder (Broad Brush) and has an unraced sophomore half-sister
named Powder Princess (Gone West). This is the same family as French and Irish
highweight St. Jovite (Pleasant Colony), hero of the Irish Derby (Ire-G1);
multiple Grade 2 winner and sire Lac Ouimet (Pleasant Colony); Grade 3 scorer
and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) runner-up L’Carriere (Carr de Naskra); dual Grade
2 victor Salem Drive (Darby Creek Road); and Kentucky Oaks (G1) queen and
champion Farda Amiga (Broad Brush).
One Caroline was purchased by her current owner for $400,000 as a
Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Selected yearling.
