Memorial Day

Last updated: 5/30/05 6:16 PM

Donamire Farm’s TWILIGHT ROAD (Cahill Road) was still near the back of the
pack as the field straightened for home in Monday’s
Memorial Day H. (G3) at
Calder, but the veteran finished with a rush under Phil Teator to take the 1
1/16-mile contest by a three-quarters of a length over fellow closer Whos Crying
Now (Concerto) and successfully defend his Memorial Day title.

The fast track event got interesting when pacesetter Runnintothealter
(Conquistador Cielo) was collared after six furlongs in 1:12 by Hear No Evil
(Carson City), who still maintained that advantage by 2 1/2 lengths with an
eighth to go. But Twilight Road, on the far outside, and Whos Crying Now to his
inside came on late to engulf the leader in the final jumps, with the former
stopping the clock in 1:47 3/5. Hear No Evil, who finished in third, was nearly 10 lengths
ahead of Demeteor (Dehere). Next came Runnintothealter, Biblical Scholar (Line
in the Sand), Built Up (Homebuilder) and Flirt With Fortune (Touch Gold).

Conditioned by David Fawkes, the eight-year-old returned $3.40, $2.60 and
$2.20 as the 3-5 favorite while keying exotics of $19.40 (exacta), $90.60 (trifecta)
and $312.20 for the 2-6-4-7 superfecta with Demeteor. Whos Crying Now paid $4.60
and $3 for his effort at 8-1 and Hear No Evil was worth $3.80 at 10-1.

Bred in Kentucky by Mira Ball, Twilight Road is out of the winning Halo mare
Glory’s Light. He has an unnamed two-year-old half-sister by Forest Wildcat and
an unnamed yearling half-brother by Cozzene. This is his fourth Grade 3 win, as
the gelding already owns scores in last year’s edition of this event, the Miami
Mile Breeders’ Cup H. and the Ack Ack H. The chestnut now shows a
mark of $781,407, 51-12-13-3.
