Brewer Racing Stable and Murray Smith’s WILD FIT (Wild Wonder) was content to sit off the pace
for the opening stages of Saturday’s $250,000
Del Mar Debutante S. (G1) before
pouncing on the leaders and kicking clear in deep stretch to record a two-length
win. With Alex Solis in the irons, the juvenile miss stopped the clock in 1:23
1/5 for seven furlongs over the fast Del Mar track.
The Jeff Mullins trainee ran nearly in last for the opening splits while
Mystery Girl (Stormy Atlantic) and Indian
Breeze (Indian Charlie) battled it out on the
front end, with the former getting the first quarter in :21 3/5 and the latter
leading through a half-mile in :44 1/5. Turning for home, Solis showed his mount
clear sailing on the outside as Indian Breeze threw in the towel and River’s
Prayer (Devon Lane) made a run at the leader. Mystery Girl held the lead after six
furlongs in 1:09 4/5, but it would be short lived as Wild Fit hit her best stride
through the lane and surged down the middle of the track, passing both the front
runner and River’s Prayer in the final furlong to cross the wire first.
Sent off as the 3-2 post-time favorite, Wild Fit returned $5, $3.60 and $2.80
for her efforts. Mystery Girl valiantly held second after pressing the pace,
giving back $4.60 and $3.40 at 9-2 while completing the $9.60 exacta ($1). River’s
Prayer finished another two lengths back, worth $4 for the show on the bottom of
the $65.20 trifecta ($1). Miss Norman (Artax) came next, filling out the fourth spot
in the $686.90 superfecta ($1), and was followed by I Can See (Flying Chevron),
Golden Silk (Songandaprayer), Slick Road (Mud Route), Calamity Jane (Cape
Canaveral), Bully Bones (Hesabull), Diplomat Lady (Forestry) and Indian Breeze.
Wild Fit’s perfect record remained intact in her first try against stakes
company, and her line now reads 2-2-0-0 with earnings of $180,600. Bred in
Florida by Hannahill Farm, Wild Fit is out of the unraced Grannies Feather (A
Full Feather) and is a full sister to both San Vicente S. (G2) winner Fusiachi
Rock Star and a 2005 colt.
