A sloppy, sealed track greeted Mark H. Stanley’s QUIET TEMPER (Quiet
American) when she stepped out as a part of the nine-horse field in Friday
evening’s $500,000
Delta Princess S. (G3), but that didn’t deter the Dale Romans charge from
breaking her maiden in the one-mile test. With jockey Robby Albarado aboard, the
bay juvenile easily drew off for the 7 3/4-length victory while stopping the
clock in 1:40.
Breaking from the far outside post, Quiet Temper moved up to press the
pacesetting Truth and Justice (Yes It’s True) and Lela (Trippi) through splits
of :22 3/5, :47 2/5 and 1:13 1/5. Truth and Justice began backing up rounding
the turn, then took a bad step and was immediately pulled up by jockey Joe
Bravo. Quiet Temper was more than ready to take command and exploded to the
front, leading by four lengths in midstretch and merely extending her margin
from there.
Despite her maiden status, Quiet Temper was sent off the co-second choice at
7-2 and returned $9, $4.60 and $3.20 while keying the $36.60 exacta and $185.80 trifecta. Bella Diamante (Lost Soldier) settled into midpack on the backstretch
and put in a late rally to nose out Joanie’s Catch (First Tour) for second,
paying $4.40 and $3, also at 7-2. Show was worth $3.80 at 5-1, and Best Reward
(Grand Reward) rounded out the top four another half-length back, ending the
$591.40 superfecta (8-6-3-1) at 6-1.
Drewman Prince (Drewman), Lela, Woman Soldier (Werblin) and The Rumor’s True
(Kafwain) completed the order under the wire. Truth and Justice, the 2-1
favorite, sustained several fractures to her right knee and had to be
euthanized, according to Daily Racing Form.
Quiet Temper had made three starts prior to this one, running second each
time. In her August 10 debut at Saratoga, the bay miss was second to Proud Zoe
(Proud Accolade), who would go on to take the Monmouth Park N.A.T.C. Futurity by
4 1/2 lengths. Next up came a neck second behind Mambo Fever (Stormin Fever),
herself runner-up when returning in the Tempted S. (G3). The winner of the
Tempted, Ailalea (Pulpit), handed Quiet Temper her last loss on October 4 at
Belmont Park. With this first lucrative win finally under her girth, Quiet
Temper’s earnings have skyrocketed to $328,800.
Bred in Kentucky by James Jones, Quiet Temper has more than earned back her
Keeneland September purchase price of $90,000. She is out of the unraced Dead Aim (Silver Deputy),
who has since produced yearling and weanling fillies, both by Whywhywhy. Quiet
Temper’s third dam is multiple Grade 2 winner Blitey (Riva Ridge), herself the
dam of Grade 1 scorers Fantastic Find (Mr. Prospector), Furlough (Easy Goer) and
Dancing Spree (Nijinsky II), the latter of whom captured the 1989 Breeders’ Cup
Sprint (G1). Fantastic Find would go on to produce dual Grade 1 heroine Finder’s
Fee (Storm Cat), while Furlough is the dam of Grade 3 victor Happy Hunting
(Seeking the Gold).
Another of Blitey’s offspring, the unraced Oh What a Dance (Nijinsky II), is
herself the dam of champion and eight-time Grade 1 queen Heavenly Prize, Grade 1
victress Oh What a Windfall and Grade 1 runner-up Dancinginmydreams, all by
Seeking the Gold. Upon their retirements, Heavenly Prize would produce multiple
Grade 1 winner Good Reward (Storm Cat) and Grade 2 scorer Pure Prize (Storm
Cat); Oh What a Windfall is the dam of this year’s Lexington S. (G2) runner-up
Conservative (Unbridled’s Song); and Dancinginmydreams is responsible for last
season’s Manhattan H. (G1) winner and Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) third Dancing
Forever (Rahy).
