Multiple Grade 1 winner BORREGO (El Prado [Ire]) will return to where he was born and raised,
Wintergreen Farm near Midway, Kentucky, to stand at stud in 2007.
The five-year-old, who will continue to race through 2006, is expected to
make his seasonal debut in the $1 million Santa Anita H. (G1) on March 4.
“Starting with the Big Cap, we hope to run in the major events,” said
Wintergreen’s John Greely IV, “ending up at the Breeders’ Cup (Classic [G1]) as
his farewell to racing.”
Borrego really came on in the second half of 2005, recording his first stakes
victory in the Pacific Classic S. (G1)
at Del Mar and following up with a 4 1/2-length win in the Jockey Club Gold Cup
S. (G1) at Belmont.
He has placed in many prestigious events throughout his career, including last
year’s Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) and Big ‘Cap, as well as the 2004 runnings of the Arkansas
Derby (G2), Louisiana Derby (G2) and Super Derby (G2). In his most recent start,
the chestnut was unplaced in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Belmont Park.
Borrego has earned more than $2 million from a record of 20-5-6-2.
“We are incredibly excited about another Wintergreen-raised horse returning
to us,” said Greely, brother of Borrego’s trainer Beau Greely. “Our success with
Five Star Day bodes well for Borrego’s future with us here.”
