Shared Belief scheduled for nuclear scan

Shared Belief (Candy Ride) was scheduled to undergo a nuclear scan on Sunday,
one day after he was pulled
up by jockey Mike Smith as the 3-10 favorite entering the second of three turns
in Saturday’s 1 1/8-mile Charles Town Classic (G2).

“He’s going for a scan at a facility near the track and see if they can find
anything,” assistant trainer Dan Ward said Sunday at Santa
Anita. “We don’t think it’s serious.”

“He seems to be doing very well today. There’s a little something bugging him
in his right hind, but he walked sound, and he jogged down the road sound,”
trainer Jerry Hollendorfer told Daily Racing Form.
“We’re going to give the horse a good going over from head to toe with a nuclear
scan. Hopefully, nothing will be wrong.”

West Virginia State Veterinarian Dr. Elizabeth Daniel reported after the
race that she noted Shared Belief had a slightly swollen stifle.

“When I got to the horse, I saw a little soft tissue swelling in the right
stifle,” she explained. “We gather it’s something that happened leaving the starting gate. He
didn’t appear to be traveling well from the time he left the gate.”

Shared Belief brought a three-race win streak in the Charles Town Classic,
including a romping 4 1/4-length score in the Santa Anita H. (G1) on March 7.
The dark bay gelding won all three of his
starts during Santa Anita’s winter meet, including the December 26 Malibu S.
(G1) at seven furlongs and February 7 San Antonio Invitational (G2), in which he defeated
Horse of the Year California Chrome.
