Cinnamon on top for freshman sire J P’s Gusto

Last updated: 6/21/15 2:50 PM

Cinnamon J P battled resiliently every step of the way in Saturday’s
5TH
race at Lone Star Park, becoming the first winner sired by Grade 1 hero J P’s
Gusto (Successful Appeal).

Off at 11-1 in her debut for owner/trainer J.R. Caldwell, the bay filly
argued through splits of :22 4/5 and :47 2/5 on the fast track, put away her
pace rivals, and held by three-quarters of a length. She completed the
five-furlong affair, a $25,000 maiden claimer, in 1:00 4/5 beneath Iram Diego.

Cinnamon J P was bred by Labhras Draper in Kentucky and initially sold for
$9,000 as a Keeneland November weanling. Caldwell purchased her for $7,000 at
OBS this March. The juvenile was produced by the stakes-placed Que Bonita (Meadowlake),
herself a full sister to multiple stakes victress and Grade 3-placed Pretty
Meadow as well as a half-sister to stakes scorers Why Tonto (Indian Charlie) and
Because I’m Gold (Miswaki).

J P’s Gusto earned his signature win in the 2010 Del Mar Futurity (G1),
capping a four-race skein that also featured the Best Pal (G2), Hollywood
Juvenile Championship (G3) and his maiden score in the Willard Proctor Memorial.
Also runner-up in the CashCall Futurity (G1), Norfolk (G1) and Southwest (G3),
he ended his career with a 6 3/4-length rout of the lucrative Red Legend at
Charles Town in 2011.

Retired with a mark of 12-5-3-0, $811,760, J P’s Gusto is a full brother to
Grade 2-placed Magic Appeal. Their notable half-sibling, stakes-placed Kid Majic
(Lemon Drop Kid), is in turn the dam of multiple stakes winner Miss Mischief
(Into Mischief), who has placed in the Hendrie (Can-G3) and Trillium in her last
pair at Woodbine.

J P’s Gusto is out of multiple stakes victress Call Her Magic (Caller I.D.),
from the immediate family of champion and $2.1 million-earner Proud Spell (Proud
Citizen).

The seven-year-old stallion stands at Journeyman Stud near Ocala, Florida,
for $2,000, stands and nurses.
