The Juvenile Fillies (G1) kicks off the Breeders’ Cup program. DREAMING OF ANNA (Rahy), who is unbeaten and untested
in three career starts, easily rates our top choice. The chestnut broke her
maiden on the dirt in her debut at Arlington Park, then easily won the Tippett
S. by 7 1/4 lengths in course-record time at Colonial Downs. In her most recent
outing, she drew off through the lane under nothing more than a hand ride to win
the Summer S. (Can-G3) by 3 1/4 lengths at Woodbine, completing the one-mile
distance on a firm course in 1:35, while finishing her final quarter-mile in :23.
The horse who chased her home, the Bill Mott-trained Marcavelly (Johannesburg),
is a top-level turf horse, but when the real running started, he could not get
close.
Underneath Dreaming of Anna, we’re going to box-up COTTON BLOSSOM (Broken
Vow), HER MAJESTY (Giant’s Causeway), CASH INCLUDED (Include), APPEALING ZOPHIE
(Successful Appeal), OCTAVE (Unbridled’s Song), BEL AIR BEAUTY (Smart Strike),
and maybe some others.
The Todd Pletcher-trained Cotton Blossom ran better than her running line
indicates in the Alcibiades S. (G2) at Keeneland. The big bay was hung
three-wide around the first turn, pressed three-wide down the backstretch, bid
three-wide around the second turn, was bumped by the winner near the
three-sixteenths pole, then held on well for fourth, beaten 3 1/4 lengths. She
projects an outside stalking trip under first-call
rider John Velazquez.
Her Majesty made a sweeping move around the second turn before nosing out
Cotton Blossom for third in the Alcibiades. According to the Trakus system, she
ran 71.2 feet more than the winner, Bel Air Beauty. Trainer Patrick Biancone is
adding blinkers and first-time Lasix for her third career start in the Juvenile
Fillies and she has the look of an intriguing price play under Julien Leparoux.
Oak Leaf S. (G1) heroine Cash Included is the real deal, but she is the
morning-line favorite and we always look for value. The recently acquired Craig
Dollase trainee stalked the pacesetter down the backside, easily took the lead
on the far turn, then drew off with authority, winning the Oak Leaf by 4 3/4
lengths and galloping out strongly past the finish line. The dark bay displayed
considerable maturity and professionalism — as well as serious improvement —
in the Oak Leaf and will be a filly to be reckoned with.
The speedy Appealing Zophie set the pace against the bias before finishing a
respectable sixth, beaten 4 1/2 lengths, in the Alcibiades. The Spinaway S. (G1)
heroine figures to get sent for the lead from the outside and could go a long
way on the front end. She is worth a second look at a price. Octave, who is trained by Pletcher, closed determinedly along the rail,
took the lead in the shadow of the wire, then just missed, finishing in a
dead-heat for second with stablemate Featherbed (Smart Strike) in the Matron S.
(G1). She has yet to finish worse than second in four career starts and figures
to go postward at square odds under Garrett Gomez.
Bel Air Beauty got a dream trip along the rail before angling out and running
down Untouched Talent (Storm Cat) to win the Alcibiades. She is a nice filly but
will have to transfer her form to the dirt. ADHRHYTHM (Adhocracy) was a
good-looking, 4 3/4-length winner of the lucrative My Dear Girl division of the
Florida Stallion S. around two turns at Calder in her last start. She gets a
rider change to Edgar Prado and could earn a minor part with improvement.
The speedy LILLY CARSON (Carson City) broke her maiden first out at Saratoga,
then dueled for the early lead against a strong headwind before finishing third
in the one-mile Frizette S. (G1), which was timed in 1:40 1/5. She figures to be an early pace factor only. SUTRA (Meadowlake) just missed in the
Arlington-Washington Breeders’ Cup Lassie S. (G3), then came running late to capture the
Frizette. She is well drawn near the inside for a ground-saving trip but would
be a surprise with these.
QUICK LITTLE MISS (Freud) likes to come from the clouds and exits a
third-place effort in the Oak Leaf. She could crash the tri or super at huge
odds. GATORIZE (Exploit), another closer, finished a better-than-appears fifth
in the Alcibiades, but will have to work out a trip from the far outside post
position. Grade 1-placed SHE’S INCLUDED (Include) finished a dull eighth in the
Alcibiades and would need a form reversal to earn a part. SATULAGI (Officer) is
a useful listed sort in England but appears to be a fish out of water here.
