The four-year-old filly SMOOTHE AS CANDY (Candy Ride [Arg]) brought a final
bid of $70,000 from Narvick International at Monday’s Barretts Winter Mixed Sale
in Pomona, California. Offered by Rancho Paseana, agent, the broodmare prospect
toured the ring as Hip No. 283A.
Smoothe as Candy placed three times in five starts for earnings of $25,480. The
Kentucky-bred is out of the stakes-winning Seattle Slew mare Crownette, making
her a full sister to 2009 El Camino Real Derby (G3) winner Chocolate Candy, who
also placed in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) and CashCall Futurity (G1), and
finished fifth in the Kentucky Derby (G1). Crownette has
also produced the multiple Grade 3-placed sire Crowning Storm (Storm Cat), and
is the third dam of current Grade 1 star Twirling Candy (Candy Ride [Arg]),
whose recent stakes wins include the Malibu S. (G1) and Del Mar Derby (G2).
Smoothe as Candy descends from Won’t Tell You (Crafty Admiral), the dam of
Hall of Famer Affirmed (Exclusive Native) and second dam of Grade 1 winner Senor
Pete (Green Dancer).
A juvenile filly by Tribal Rule, consigned by River Edge Farm, agent, sold to
Marcelo Polanco for $38,000. The April 25-foaled California-bred sported Hip 45.
Produced by the Argentinean Group 3 winner Miss Peggy (Arg) (Fitzcarraldo),
the filly is a half-sister to Argentinean champion and U.S. Grade 1 winner Miss
Linda (Arg), Argentinean champion Mr. Nancho and Argentinean Group 2 winner Miss
Mary (Arg), all by Southern Halo. Miss Peggy is also the second dam of
Argentinean Group 1 winner Miss Match (Arg) (Indygo Shiner), most recently an
allowance winner at Golden Gate Fields on January 23.
On Monday, 257 horses sold for $1,361,600, a decline of 32.4 percent from
last year when $2,013,000 was realized from the sale of 275 head that included a
large consignment from prominent owner Jenny Craig. The average and median were
down 27.6 percent ($7,320 to $5,298) and 21.9 percent ($3,200 to $2,500),
respectively.
