Restrictions lifted on one Calder barn; three remain
quarantined
Results of testing for equine herpes virus (EHV-1) on a horse in one of the
quarantined barns at Calder Race Course came back negative Saturday morning,
allowing for the quarantine on that barn to be lifted, thus unrestricting the
activity of all the horses in that barn, including racing.
Three barns at Calder remain under quarantine conditions implemented on
Novenber 30 after a horse in one of the barns was diagnosed with the contagious
equine disease. The fourth barn had been placed under quarantine on Thursday
while the sample on a horse that exhibited symptoms was sent to the University
of Kentucky College of Agriculture Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center for
testing.
Precautionary operational procedures including bio-security measures continue
at Calder to reduce the risk of further contamination. The temperatures of
horses in the quarantined barns are taken twice daily and horses exhibiting a
fever over 102 degrees, nasal discharge or chronic cough are immediately tested.
There have been no other horses demonstrating symptoms thus far.
Calder has targeted dates to lift shipping restrictions on the entire stable
area (December 13) and to lift the quarantine for the three barns (December 20)
based on no horses testing positive for EHV-1.
