The Hollywood Park fall meet concludes Sunday with the $75,000
On Trust H.,
where CAYAMBE (Helmsman) drew post 1 against six rivals in the 7 1/2-furlong
Cushion Track contest for California-bred or sired older horses.
More successful this season on dirt and turf, Cayambe does own four
all-weather victories from 18 appearances, and enters off a solid fourth-place
effort in the California Cup Classic. Two races back the veteran six-year-old
led gate to-wire in taking the Ralph Hinds Pomona H. at Fairplex by a neck at
odds of 25-1. A six-furlong winner over the local turf earlier this year,
Cayambe seems capable of negotiating the cutback in distance with no apparent
problem.
Most of the main players in the On Trust have been competing in recent
allowance/optional claimers. AMAZOMBIE (Northern Afleet) is a four-time winner
this season, albeit all on turf. EARNEDNEVERGIVEN (Cee’s Tizzy) has run first or
second in his last four starts, while MOBILIZED (Soul of the Matter) and THE BAT
SIGNAL (Gotham City) also merit respect based on their recent form.
AUTISM AWARENESS (Tannersmyman), who has upset a pair of Grade 3 events
during the course of his career, possesses the most back class but has placed
only twice in nine starts since taking the Berkeley S. (G3) in May 2009. The
consistent check-getter A LIL DUMAANI (Dumaani) has been relatively win-shy over
the past two seasons, compiling a mark of 18-3-8-4.
