Jockey John Velazquez established a new single-season earnings record for a
North American jockey at Aqueduct on Sunday. Thus far this year, horses ridden
by Velazquez have earned $23,355,830. Velazquez’s third-place finish aboard India (Hennessy) in the
Valley Stream S. (G3), worth $10,792, pushed him past
Jerry Bailey’s previous mark of $23,354,960 set in 2003.
Velazquez earned the Eclipse Award for outstanding jockey in 2004, winning 335 times, including such major scores as the Breeders’ Cup
Distaff (G1), Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational S.
(G1), Ruffian H. (G1), Personal Ensign H. (G1) and E.P. Taylor S. (Can-G1).
Last year, Velazquez compiled $22,259,814 in earnings.
Earlier this season, Velazquez annexed the $6 million Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) in
March aboard Roses in May.
