Bob and Beverly Lewis made it to the winner’s circle for Monday’s $150,000
Santa Ynez S. (G2) at Santa Anita, but it wasn’t with Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
Fillies (G1) winner Folklore (Tiznow). Instead, the heavily bet filly finished
behind her stablemate, DANCE DAILY (Five Star Day), who earned her first stakes victory
by the narrowest of margins over Talullah Lula (Old Trieste).
Folklore streaked to the early lead, clocking fractions of :23, :46 and 1:10
2/5, while being stalked by her entrymate, who loomed closely in second
for the majority of her trip. As the Lukas-trained duo made their run down the
stretch, Talullah Lulah made a game rally on the rail, battling with
Dance Daily on the far outside in deep stretch as Folklore began to weaken
between rivals, but the runner-up just missed by a nose at the wire.
Dance Daily completed seven furlongs
over the fast track in 1:23 1/5 under jockey Jon Court. Folklore finished
three parts of a length back in third.
“Folklore is already a Grade 1 winner and she’ll go on to bigger and better
things so we’re happy to get this one (Dance Daily) a stakes win,” trainer D.
Wayne Lukas said. “I thought she’d make a little bit of noise in the race and
she did.”
Dance Daily and Folklore returned $2.40, $2.10 and $2.10 at 1-5 while
Talullah Lula gave back $2.10 and $2.10 at 9-2 for the place. The $1 exacta paid
$2.70. Lake Como (Salt Lake), My Little Monkey (Old Trieste) and Trick’s Pic
(Favorite Trick) rounded out the order of finish.
Bred in Kentucky by J C Davis Farm, Dance Daily is out of the unraced mare
Dance Alexa (Southern Halo) and counts herself as a half-sister to an unnamed
yearling filly by Luhuk. Dance Daily was purchased for $600,000 at the Barretts
March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training and now shows a record of
9-3-0-1 with $171,292 in earnings.
“I don’t want to make a decision now,” said Lukas on the next race back for
the two fillies. “But I’ll run one of them back in there (Las Virgenes S. [G1]
on February 11) for sure.”
Lukas captured his fifth Santa Ynez. He’s also won with Terlingua (1979), Gene’s Lady (1984), Wising Up (1985) and Serena’s Song (1995).
