“We’ve really been high on this filly,” Baffert said of the Hill ‘n’ Dale

“It was too late to get a race into her to run her in the Breeders’ Cup,”
Baffert added. “I wasn’t sure if I was going to run her in here because I didn’t
nominate her. Her last two works showed she could really sit off a horse.
“When I saw her up there at 14-1 (before closing at 10-1), I told (owner)
John (Sikura) when you supplement ($10,000 plus an additional $10,000 to start),
you’re supposed to be 8-5. You’re always hoping they’ll run like they train and
how they’re bred.
“We’ve been lucky to win some Starlets (three) and especially with this being
the last one. She’s really special. I think we saw something special today.”
Taste Like Candy, stretching out from a 5 1/2-furlong maiden to two turns,
sped to the early lead. Streaming, likewise tackling a route for the first time,
was bumped by Arethusa at the start. But Streaming soon recovered beneath Martin
Garcia and moved up to prompt Taste Like Candy through fractions of :23 4/5 and
:47 4/5 on the Cushion Track. After ratcheting up the pressure on the leader
through six furlongs in 1:12 4/5, Streaming put her head in front. Untapable
commenced her rally into third on the far turn, but wasn’t going well enough to
reach the top two.

“The winner did the same thing we did,” Hollendorfer said, referring to
running in a Grade 1 after breaking her maiden. “I thought she ran even better
than she did last time, but we were second best. We’re happy with this effort.”
Taste Like Candy had 1 1/4 lengths to spare over Untapable, who saved third
from the closing Rosalind by a nose.
Even in defeat, Untapable proved that she’d turned the page from her
Breeders’ Cup debacle.
“Coming into the stretch I loved her chances, but then she kind of evened
out,” trainer Steve Asmussen said. “That’s just where she’s at right now. It’s a
nice rebound from where she ran in the Breeders’ Cup.”
Arethusa, Bajan, Be Proud and the eased Concave concluded the order of
finish.
