Dual champion Beholder (Henny Hughes) was never threatened in taking Saturday’s
$300,750 Zenyatta S. (G1) at Santa Anita Park under jockey Gary Stevens. The
Richard Mandella-trained five-year-old tracked in midpack on the outside early
before ranging up under her own power to take command rounding the turn and drew
off to a 3 1/4-length victory as the prohibitive 1-10 favorite.
Campaigned by B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm, Beholder ran 1 1/16 miles in
1:42.83 to earn her third straight
Zenyatta
win. The bay mare is now five-for-five on the year and is likely headed to the
Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Keeneland on October 31. She earned a guaranteed
spot in that race when romping by 8 1/4 lengths in the 1 1/4-mile Pacific
Classic (G1) against the boys last out.
Also in this division, Godolphin’s
Wedding Toast (Street Sense) prepped for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) with
a victory in the Beldame (G1). Both recaps are up on the TwinSpires blog.
