The $200,000 La Canada S. (G2) wraps up the three-race La Canada series for
female foals of 2001, but the winners of the first two divisions, the La Brea S.
(G1) and El Encino S. (G2), have not returned for Saturday’s 1 1/8-mile event.
A. P. ADVENTURE (A.P. Indy) finished second by a head following a wide trip in
the El Encino last time and appears to be rounding back into top form for
conditioner Wally Dollase. We’ll tab her for top honors at a short price.
A. P. Adventure captured her career debut at Santa Anita and then reeled off
impressive wins in the Santa Ysabel S. (G3) and Las Virgenes S. (G1). She loves
the track and is the only member of the field to record a triple-digit BRIS
Speed rating on the dirt. The bay lass looks tough to deny from just off the
pace.
SWEET LIPS (Kris S.) is coming to hand for trainer Bobby Frankel and owns a
winning attitude, capturing six of nine career outings. There are two
front runners in this five-horse field to establish a decent pace for the
late-running chestnut, and Sweet Lips could offer a serious rally through the
stretch. She stepped forth with a nice 1 1/2-length win in the 8 1/2-furlong
Sunshine Millions Distaff and has won her last four starts at a route.
TARLOW (Stormin Fever) will show speed from the rail with Pat Valenzuela, but
she might face too much pressure from the speedy sprinter IFLOOKSCOULDKILL (Wild
Escapade) in the early stages. The dark bay has been improving for trainer
John Shirreffs, finishing a good third in the El Encino last time, and we
wouldn’t be shocked to see her run big on the front end here.
AMORAMA (Fr) (Sri Pekan) captured the Del Mar Oaks (G1) last August and has
raced mostly on the grass. She offered a decent late run for fifth in the La
Brea in her dirt debut last out and could come running late for a top three
placing here, but Amorama remains a strong candidate to return to the sod in the
near future for conditioner Julio Canani. Iflookscouldkill should ensure a
decent pace up front, but she looks better sprinting.
