Champion two-year-old filly SWEET CATOMINE (Storm Cat) heads the field for
the third Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, which is set to open Thursday at noon (EDT) and
will run through Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Favored on the morning-line at 4-1, the Julio Canani trainee
easily captured the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) last out and will make her next start in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) against
males. However, owner Marty Wygod said Sweet Catomine is unlikely to run in the Oaks
if she doesn’t make it to the Kentucky Derby (G1).
“There is no doubt that Sweet Catomine would be a very strong favorite if she
runs in the Kentucky Oaks (G1), but the uncertainty over which race will be
chosen for her should make this final Oaks Future Wager pool attractive to many
fans,” Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia said. “There should be some
enticing odds on a lot of the other Oaks contenders in this pool — especially
if Sweet Catomine runs well enough against the boys to suggest that she would
run for the Derby’s roses rather than chase the lilies that go to the Kentucky
Oaks winner.”
SUMMERLY (Summer Squall), winner of the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2), is the second
favorite at 5-1 while SIS CITY (Slew City Slew), a 16-length winner of the Davona Dale S. (G2) last out is listed as 6-1.
Those new to the Oaks Future Wager are ASPEN TREE (Holy Bull), BROOKE’S HALO
(Southern Halo), CAPE HOPE (Cape Town), DANCE AWAY CAPOTE (Capote), DIXIE
TALKING (Dixieland Band), GALLANT SECRET (Menifee), NORTHERN MISCHIEF (Yankee
Victor), THE BETER MAN CAN (Lord Avie), TOLL TAKER (Bernstein) and YANKEE PENNY
(Quiet American). Both Dance Away Capote and The Beter Man Can were included in
the first Oaks pool.
