MISS MACY SUE (Trippi) will line up against just five rivals on Monday while
going for a second straight score in the Winning Colors S. (G3) at Churchill
Downs, and the five-year-old could well accomplish her task against this group.
The Kelly Von Hemel-trained mare was an easy 2 1/4-length winner of this event
last season, and began 2008 with an 11 3/4-length allowance/optional claiming
victory at Oaklawn Park, earning a 100 BRIS Speed figure in the process. She
failed to factor in the Humana Distaff (G1) last out, but could easily reverse
that sixth-place showing in her third start off the layoff. Eusebio Razo Jr. has
the call.
CHANGE UP (Distorted Humor) holds the distinction of being one of but four
fillies to have ever finished in front of champion and classic winner Rags to
Riches. The Stephen Margolis charge was never able to build upon
that in 2007, though. She showed a winning attitude when wiring an
allowance/optional claiming field in her first race as a four-year-old, then was
second two back in the Hurricane Bertie H. (G3) at Gulfstream Park. She returned
off a near two-month break to be fifth in the Madison S. (G2) over Keeneland’s
Polytrack most recently, and could show marked improvement while returning to
the dirt and six-furlong distance she prefers. Robby Albarado has riding duties.
PRETTY JENNY (Pioneering) is a six-furlong specialist, racking up a 9-4-1
line from 17 starts at the distance. She’ll be facing her toughest competition
to date in this one and was a well-beaten second in a state-bred stakes at
Hawthorne most recently. However, one thing in her favor is that her only start
over Churchill’s track resulted in an easy two-length victory over Change Up in
the Dream Supreme H. in November. Pretty Jenny could surprise in the top three
with Jamie Theriot aboard.
GRAEME SIX (Graeme Hall) might challenge for it all under Julien Leparoux.
The Tom Amoss-trained four-year-old has so far captured the Carousel S. and Pan
Zareta S. this year, and was second in last season’s Prioress S. (G1). She
didn’t do so well when stretching out to seven furlongs in the Humana Distaff
last out, but will be returning to her preferred distance here and could finally
earn that first graded victory. ADHRHYTHM (Adhocracy) was a winner over
allowance/optional claiming rivals last out and could easily take home a check
in this spot.
GEM SLEUTH (Officer) hasn’t been able to compete against listed rivals in the
past and looks up against it here. We’ll take a stand against.
