Grade 2 hero ST AVERIL (Saint Ballado) registered his first winner as a
freshman sire when Goddess Angel romped in Sunday’s 1ST race at Timonium. After
racing in second early, the 3-5 favorite took command on the far turn and
proceeded to open up by 5 1/4 lengths. The Dale Capuano filly completed 6 1/2
furlongs in 1:22 on the fast track with Joshua Navarro aboard.
St Averil broke his maiden first time out as a juvenile for Rafael Becerra,
rolling to a three-length victory at Santa Anita. The dark bay was plunged
straight into top-level company in the Hollywood Futurity (G1) in his second
start, but handled the class hike well to finish runner-up to Lion Heart.
St Averil earned his signature score in the Santa Catalina S. (G2) in his
sophomore bow, where he rallied and drew 1 1/2 lengths clear. His resume also
includes a near-miss second in the San Felipe S. (G2), beaten a nose in a
photo-finish, and a third-place effort in the Ack Ack H. (G3) at four. He
retired with $328,742 in earnings from a 13-4-2-2 line.
Out of Grade 2 victress Avie’s Fancy (Lord Avie), St Averil is a half-brother
to stakes queen Our Cozzette (Cozzene), who is herself the dam of multiple
stakes-winning juvenile filly Our Fantene (Touch Gold). Further back, this is
the family of Grade 1 winners Rose’s Cantina (Naskra), Fancy Naskra (Naskra) and
Montreal Red (D’Accord).
The eight-year-old St Averil stands for $4,500, live foal, at Maryland
Stallion Station at Bonita Farm near Darlington, Maryland.
