Doncaster Bloodstock Sales host their two-day St Leger Festival Sale
Wednesday and Thursday ahead of the feature race on Saturday. While it does not
enjoy the high profile of its big brother, the St Leger Yearling Sales, this
spin-off has thrown up a classic winner in Penny’s Gift (Tobougg [Ire]), who
provided a major return on her 10,000 guineas purchase when capturing this
year’s German One Thousand Guineas (Ger-G2) at Dusseldorf in June. Another
graduate to make a mark this season is the juvenile Don’t Tell Mary (Starcraft
[NZ]), who collected the Hilary Needler Trophy at Beverley in May.
Among the lots to note among the 165 yearlings cataloged are Trickledown
Stud’s Hip No. 7, a filly from the first crop of Holy Roman Emporer whose dam is
the stakes-placed Lipica (Night Shift) and who hails from the family of this
year’s Silver Flash S. (Ire-G3) winner Cabaret (Galileo [Ire]); Wheelersland
Stud’s Hip 39, a half-brother to the top-class sprinter and sire Kyllachy; Hip
88, a Desert Style three-parts sister to multiple stakes winner Hucking Hot (GB)
(Desert Prince [Ire]) from the draft of Knockatrina House Stud; and New Hall
Farm Stud’s Hip 129, a Bertolini half-sister to the stakes-placed sprinter
Caribbean Coral (Brief Truce).
“The success of any sale is measured by the racecourse performance of its
graduates and to produce a classic winner in the first year of any sale is a
truly remarkable performance,” DBS Managing Director Henry Beeby said. “The
success of Penny’s Gift has been backed up by countless winners at all levels
and we are delighted that vendors have chosen to sell some fantastic individuals
at this sale.”
The sale begins after racing at Doncaster on Wednesday. Full catalog and
updates are available at dbsauctions.com.
