It took a photo, but Donald Adam’s T.D. VANCE (Rahy) held on for the upset in
Monday’s $150,000
National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S. (G2) at Saratoga. High
Limit (Maria’s Mon), who was making his turf debut, rushed to the early lead
setting splits of :23 2/5, :47 1/5 and 1:11 1/5. T. D. Vance, trained by H.
Graham Motion, stalked High Limit in the early stages, took the lead when
asked by jockey Todd Kabel, covering a mile in 1:35 4/5, and then drew clear in the
stretch. The three-year-old dug in gamely and got the nod after closely holding
off Silver Whistle (Alphabet Soup), who was charging furiously on the outside.
The final time for the nine-furlong event on firm turf was 1:48.
The winning bay gelding paid $35, $15 and $10.80 for his efforts at 16-1
while topping sizeable exotics of $231.50 (exacta), $3,038 (trifecta) and
$29,854 (5-3-2-8 superfecta). Silver Whistle returned $7.70 and $5.80 at 6-1. Crown Point (Honor Grades)
was another 1 3/4 lengths back in third and returned $6.30 to show at 17-1. High Limit
held on determinedly for fourth. Rey de
Cafe (Kingmambo), Holy Ground (Saint Ballado), Prince Rahy (Rahy), Reel Legend (Catrail)
and Interpatation (Langfuhr) rounded out the order of finish.
Bred in Kentucky by TAC Holdings, T.D. Vance is out of the unraced mare
Freedom of Speech (Danzig) and is a half-brother to Super Seller, a yearling filly by Came Home, and a 2005 filly by Thunder Gulch. The victory
improved his record to 7-4-1-0, $227,668.
