PRIVATE VOW (Broken Vow) was a bit rank while being asked to rate in second beneath jockey
Shaun Bridgmohan in Saturday’s $222,400
Kentucky Jockey Club S. (G2), but
proved much the best in the lane, running to a 2 1/4-length victory over
Churchill Downs’ fast main track. The Futurity S. (G2) winner trailed outside
High Cotton (Dixie Union) through fractions of :24 1/5, :48 4/5 and 1:13 2/5
while under a stranglehold, but shot to the lead in the stretch when let loose
by his rider, completing 1 1/16 miles in 1:45 4/5.
The Steve Asmussen trained Private Vow went off as the 3-5 favorite to return $3.40, $2.40 and $2.20
while High Cotton gave back $3.80 and $3.20 for the place at 7-2, ending the
paltry $10.60 exacta. Hyte Regency (Diligence) was another 1 3/4 lengths back in third in
his first try on the main track since July, and finished the $83 trifecta at 19-1
while paying $4.80.
Red Raymond (Deputy Commander) capped the 3-1-7-4 superfecta ($1) that
returned $209.70. Catcominatcha (Tale of the Cat), Great Point (Point Given) and
International Cat (Cat Thief) rounded out the order of finish. Carse (Wekiva
Springs) was withdrawn.
Bred in Kentucky by Mr. and Mrs. R. Witt and Mr. and Mrs. L. Scattaglia, the
Mike McCarty-owned dark bay won his fourth outing in six attempts. The colt
entered this race off an unplaced effort in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), where his rein broke while
racing down the backstretch.
Purchased for $180,000 as a Keeneland April two-year-old, Private Vow has now
earned $382,508 from a 6-4-1-0 career mark.
