Jockeys sent to hospital after spill
Francisco Duran, David Lopez and Alfredo Miranda were sent to
Highland Hospital in Oakland, California, after a chain reaction
spill that involved four horses in the 2ND race at Golden Gate
Fields on Saturday.
Dr. David Seftel, the track physician at Golden Gate, said
that tests done at the hospital revealed that Miranda and Lopez
suffered mild concussions while Duran sustained a fractured right
collarbone.
The accident occurred when Irish Tizzy (Proud Irish), ridden
by Miranda, fractured his right front ankle and fell. Rippling
Water (Mr. Procrastinator) with Duran aboard and Sky Guy (Skywalker)
with Lopez up both fell over Irish Tizzy. True Stride (Bartok [Ire]),
with jockey Iggy Puglisi in the saddle, stumbled over Irish Tizzy
but managed to stay on his feet. Puglisi came off True Stride but
appeared uninjured from the fall.
Dr. Joan Hurley, the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB)
veterinarian at the track, reported that Irish Tizzy had to be
euthanized but the other three horses appeared to be fine other
than some scrapes.
Seven horses left the gate in the claiming contest, but only
three finished. The track stewards cited CHRB rule No. 1544 and
declared the race a “no contest” since the majority of
the horses in the race were effected by the accident.
Wagers on the race, excluding multiple race bets, were
refunded. Those with live tickets in the multiple race bets were
given a win for the 2ND race.
