Greater Good captures Kentucky Jockey Club

Lewis Lakin’s GREATER GOOD (Intidab) proved he was the best
contender Saturday when he walked into the winner’s circle at
Churchill Downs after a 1 3/4-length victory in the $223,200
Kentucky Jockey Club S. (G2) for two-year-olds.

The Robert Holthus trainee sat near the back of the pack,
being patiently handled by jockey John McKee, first as Highgrove
(Forestry) took an early lead passing the first quarter in :23 2/5,
and then after B.B. Best (Yes It’s True) took control, setting
the next two fractions of :47 and 1:12 4/5. On the far turn, the
pair made their move and by the time B.B. Best crossed the one-mile
point in 1:38 3/5, had positioned themselves into third place. As
the field came down the lane, McKee put Greater Good on the rail,
passing horses under energetic handling before stopping the 1 1/16-mile
contest in 1:45 over the fast track.

Leaving the gate at 4-1, Greater Good returned $10.80, $5.40
and $3.80 and keyed a $75.80 exact. Rush Bay (Cozzene) crossed
the wire 1 3/4-lenghts back in second, paying $6.40 and $4.20 at
5-1. Wild Desert (Wild Rush) closed for third, a neck in front of
B.B. Best, and gave back $8.40 as the 33-1 longshot, ending a $1,045.20
trifecta. The 4-2-3-6 superfecta ($1) paid $5,371.50.

Magna Graduate (Honor Grades) followed the fourth-place B.B.
Best, with 5-2 favorite Storm Surge (Storm Cat), Drum Major (Dynaformer),
Social Probation (Jules) and Highgrove rounding out the field.

Bred in Kentucky by A Lakin and Sons Inc., the chestnut is out
of the Grade 3 winning Gather the Clan (Ire) (General Assembly).
This victory increases the colt’s record to 5-3-0-1 with earnings
of $226,275.
