Keeneland January begins with 1,796-strong catalog
Keeneland kicks off its 58th January Horses of All Ages
Sale on Monday with a total of 1,796 horses cataloged. Among them are prominent
broodmares and broodmare prospects, yearlings by leading North American sires
and horses of racing age. The sale runs through Friday, January 15.
The January Sale catalog includes 624 broodmares, 181
broodmare prospects, 729 yearlings, 251 horses of racing age and 11 stallions
and stallion prospects. Broodmares are in foal to many leading sires of 2015,
which also are represented by yearlings in the sale.
The catalog includes such notable offerings as My Limit,
dam of recent La Brea (G1) winner Birdatthewire, in foal to Giant’s Causeway.
Cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect is Wickedly Smart, a winner in
England and a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Wickedly Perfect, dam of recent
Japanese Grade 2 winner and undefeated sophomore Hartley.
Broodmares offered are in foal to 168 prominent stallions,
including Bernardini, Bodemeister, Declaration of War, Ghostzapper, Giant’s
Causeway, Hard Spun, Lemon Drop Kid, Malibu Moon, More Than Ready, Orb, Scat
Daddy, Shanghai Bobby, Uncle Mo and Union Rags.
The January Sale also is noted as a marketplace for short
yearlings, foals of 2015 who officially turned a year old on January 1. Among
the 2015 stakes winners sold as yearlings at the sale are Grade 1 winners Ball
Dancing and Twilight Eclipse; Grade 2 winners Alert Bay, Bailoutbobby, Call Me
George, Conquest Daddyo, Fioretti and Tower of Texas; and Grade 3 winner Far
Right.
The 191 stallions represented by yearlings in the catalog
include such top sires as Bodemeister, Curlin, Distorted Humor, Into Mischief,
Kitten’s Joy, Malibu Moon, More Than Ready, Orb, Pioneerof the Nile, Scat Daddy,
Shanghai Bobby, Street Cry, Street Sense, Super Saver, Uncle Mo, Union Rags and
War Front.
The auction also includes three dispersals: Black Rock
Thoroughbreds, consigned by Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services, agent; the
Estate of Eric A. Delvalle, consigned by Brandywine Farm, agent; and the part
dispersal of the Estate of Sarah J. Leigh, consigned by Denali Stud, agent.
