Champion DEVIL’S BAG (Halo) was euthanized Thursday morning at
Claiborne Farm near Paris, Kentucky, after suffering an injury in his stall.
Syndicated for $36 million at the end of
his two-year-old career in 1983, the 24-year-old stallion entered stud in 1985
and produced 455 winners
and 43 stakes winners from 18 crops.
His most noted progeny include 1998 Japanese Horse of the Year Taiki Shuttle; Devil His Due, who captured five Grade 1 races while
earning just under $4 million; and Twilight Agenda, who captured the 1991
Meadowlands Cup H. (G1) and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1),
Pacific Classic (G1) and Santa Anita H. (G1).
Trained by Woody Stephens, Devil’s Bag was undefeated from five starts at
two, posting wins in the Champagne S. (G1) and Laurel Futurity (G1) en route to
the Eclipse Award. He won three of four outings during his sophomore campaign,
wrapping up his career with a victory in the Derby Trial S.
