A field of seven has been entered in Saturday’s $150,000 Davona Dale S. (G2) at
Gulfstream Park and SIS CITY (Slew City Slew) appears to be the class of this
group. Trained by Richard Dutrow, the bay sophomore is returning off a more than
two-month break but has won before off the layoff, actually breaking her maiden
in August under such a circumstance. That race also provided her with new
connections, as she was claimed and immediately showed marked improvement by
taking the Mongo Queen S. at Monmouth Park by 16 lengths. In her next one, Sis
City finished a good third in the Frizette S. (G1) and she then took on the top echelon
in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). She conducted herself well in that
one, leading for a long time before tiring a bit in the stretch to finish fourth, earning a 99 BRIS Speed rating in the process. Sis City enters the Davona Dale
off an easy win in the Demoiselle S. (G2) and has been working well in
preparation for this one. John Velazquez has the call.
DANCE AWAY CAPOTE (Capote) owns the numbers to surprise in this nine-furlong
event. The Graham
Motion trainee is also returning from a hiatus after running fifth in the
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. In that one, the gray filly came from the back
after breaking slow and being blocked, but still garnered a 99 Speed figure as
well as a 101 BRIS Late Pace rating. Dance Away Capote put in some good runs
prior to that race, finishing just three parts of a length back in fourth in the Alcibiades S. (G2) and capturing the Irish Sonnet S. by 12 lengths in her third
career start. She could be rounding into form and will have Ramon Dominguez
returning to the saddle.
IN THE GOLD (Golden Missile) made her three-year-old debut a winning one last
out, taking an allowance over the track by 1 1/2 lengths while earning a 100
Speed rating. The Nick Zito charge finished just a head back in third in the Alcibiades in October then tried to come from off the pace in the Golden Rod S.
(G2) but ended up fifth. She returned to her normal front-running style in her
most recent start and could use that race as a springboard to bigger and better
things here. Edgar Prado will be in the irons.
LEONA’S KNIGHT (Suave Prospect) doesn’t own quite the same numbers as others
in here, but the Barry Rose-conditioned bay miss could show improvement while
returning to the dirt in this spot. She is already a veteran stakes performer,
taking the Three Ring S. and finishing third in two others, all at Calder. This
will be her first race outside of that track and we’re willing to give her a
chance in the exotics based on past accomplishments against stakes company. JILL
ROBIN (Precocity) took five tries to break her maiden, but seems to have
flourished since that win. Her most recent start, a solid second to In the Gold,
was her sophomore bow and she managed to rally four wide at odds of
36-1 that day. The bay lass posted some nice numbers last time, including a
102 E2 Pace rating, and she could show more at good odds again on Saturday
under Robby Albarado.
MOCITA (Boundary) has done well in her past two, taking an allowance over a
sloppy Calder track and running second by a neck in another allowance over that
fast track, but doesn’t seem fast enough to challenge against these. We’ll watch
to see how she handles her stakes debut. KRISTEN KRISTEN (Storm Boot) just broke
her maiden last out in her fifth try, admittedly by 8 3/4 lengths, but she could
be taking the class jump a bit too soon.
