Saturday’s $100,000 Generous S. (G3) for two-year-olds at Hollywood Park
could have a chalky result if BRIDGETOWN (Speightstown) continues to show his
best stuff. Winner of the Summer S. (Can-G3) two back, the Kenny McPeek pupil
ran his eyeballs out in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G2) last time, losing
by less than a length to the classy European shipper Pounced (Rahy). As the most
accomplished participant in the one-mile Generous on turf, he is undoubtedly the
one to fear most.
A modest pace could be in the offing here, so we like last-out maiden
winner WHO’S UP (Graeme Hall) to last for a placing. He responded positively to
the addition of blinkers and a switch to grass last month at Santa Anita,
winning by two lengths. Runner-up to the promising Sidney’s Candy (Candy Ride
[Arg]) in his August 22 debut, he was out of the money when stepping up into the
Del Mar Futurity (G1) two back. He’s more in his element in this spot.
ALFARABI (Yes It’s True) won his maiden over the Del Mar turf prior to a
tiring seventh in the Norfolk S. (G1). He’s another that should be forwardly
positioned from the opening bell and goes for an Eoin Harty barn which has struck
with two of its first four starters.
MARCELLO (Johannesburg) has a great pedigree for turf, being out of an
Affirmed mare, and joins Bridgetown and LUCKY RAVE (GB) (Lucky Story) as the
only two-time winners in the field. He makes his grass debut here following an
allowance score on the Pro-Ride and could threaten from off the pace if a speed
duel develops. Lucky Rave was no factor in the Norfolk in his U.S. debut, but
did show some ability over turf in England. Given more time to acclimate, he
figures stronger in his second stateside appearance.
SUMMER MOVIE (Holy Bull) prevailed in a turf maiden at Santa Anita following
a stretch-long duel. That was a gutsy performance, and he’s had nearly two
months to recover from it. Like other recent grads, however, he gets a class
test here. The two remaining starters, COLOURSOFTHEGLEN (Ire) (La Vie Dei Colori)
and ACE OF ACES (Ire) (Antonius Pius), invade from Europe where neither
demonstrated great class. Coloursoftheglen broke his maiden on Polytrack while
Ace of Aces missed by a nose in his Fairyhouse debut. We’ll give each of them a
start as they get used to new surroundings.
