Grade 1 winner STORMELLO (Stormy Atlantic) was euthanized due to
complications from colic on Tuesday at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in
Lexington, Kentucky. The seven-year-old stallion, whose first foals are
two-year-olds this year, had been standing at Vinery Kentucky since entering
stud in 2008.
One of the best two-year-olds of his generation, Stormello was trained by
William Currin, who also owned and bred the colt in partnership with Alvin
Eisman.
After breaking his maiden at Del Mar by 3 1/2 lengths, Stormello placed in
the Best Pal (G2) and Del Mar Futurity (G2). He then went on to win the Norfolk
(G2) at Santa Anita, and closed out the year with a hard-fought victory in the
Hollywood Futurity (G1).
Ranked sixth on the Experimental Free Handicap, Stormello came back as a
three-year-old, and in one of his best performances finished second by only a
nose to Scat Daddy in the Fountain of Youth (G2).
“He was gorgeous,” Currin said. “His enormous heart for racing thrilled us.
We look forward to seeing his babies on the race track, and we cherish our
memories of him.”
Raised at Catherine Parke’s Valkyre Stud, Stormello was out of the Carson
City mare Wilshewed.
