Cozze Up Lady rallies to take Chicago Handicap

Last updated: 6/29/13 6:15 PM

Cozze Up Lady saved ground to the stretch, shifted out for a clear path, and
emerged from a line of fillies and mares to take Saturday’s Grade 3, $150,000
Chicago
Handicap
at Arlington Park by three parts of a length under Miguel Mena.

The 4-1 third choice in a field of nine, Cozze Up Lady paid $10.40, $5.80 and
$3.80 after completing seven furlongs on the Polytrack in 1:23.

“She broke good and there was a really good pace in front of us,” said Mena,
referring to Flower Spell’s splits of :22 3/5 and :45. “We just had to wait to
get through and we did that at the three-sixteenths pole. She was home free.”

Queen’s Award, a 10-1 chance, finished second by a length over 8-5 favorite
Aubby K, the Humana Distaff winner who was making her first start over a
synthetic surface.

Following the public choice under the wire were Maude S, Flower Spell, Drama
Drama, Dr. Diamonds Prize, La Song and Lady Chesterfield. Gold Edge was
scratched.

“We had a lot of confidence and we were pointing for this race for a while,”
said Bret Calhoun, who trains the four-year-old filly for Martin Racing, Morgan
Thoroughbred, Westwind Property and Farfellow Farms. “She’s in very good form
and we thought she’d like the synthetic surface. We thought seven-eighths would
be a real good distance for her.

“It’s has been a goal for us to get some graded stakes wins under her. We got
this one done and hopefully there will be more in the future.”

Bred in Kentucky by Farfellow Farms, Cozze Up Lady was stakes-placed twice
last season on grass, in the Indiana Distaff at Indiana Downs and the Sandy Blue
Handicap at Del Mar. With this third victory in five starts on a synthetic
surface, her overall record now stands at 11-5-2-2, $250,431.

A daughter of the Johannesburg mare The White Lady, Cozze Up Lady counts as
her third dam the multiple Grade 3 queen Apolda, who is herself a half-sister to
Grade 3 winner Ganges. Multiple Grade 3 winner Bedanken also hails from this
female line.
