Dr. Brendler tops Red Smith
Grade 2 hero DR. BRENDLER (Distant View) has been assigned the
highweight of 120 pounds in Saturday’s $150,000 Red Smith H. (G2)
and will be making only his second start of the year in the 1
3/8-mile turf test. The Graham Motion-trained six-year-old didn’t
make his 2004 bow until October 15, when he ran second by a neck
in a Keeneland allowance, and will have jockey Jose Santos in the
saddle for the first time.
EVENING ATTIRE (Black Tie Affair [Ire]) captured the 2002
edition of the Red Smith (G3) by an easy eight lengths when it
came off the turf, and the Grade 1 winner is more proven on the
main track than the grass. The gray veteran will be seeking his
first turf score on Saturday, but he does come off an encouraging
runner-up performance in the grassy Knickerbocker H. (G2) over
the Aqueduct course last out. He’ll only have to tote 116 pounds
under Jose Espinoza.
The complete field for the Red Smith, with jockeys and
imposts, is Evening Attire; ROCHESTER (Green Dancer), Cornelio
Velasquez, 116; CERTIFIABLY CRAZY (Fit to Fight), Pablo Fragoso,
112; DREADNAUGHT (Lac Ouimet), Jean-Luc Samyn, 115; SECOND
PERFORMANCE (Theatrical [Ire]), Norberto Arroyo Jr., 110;
NAVESINK RIVER (Unbridled), Jamie Spencer, 108; IRISH COLONIAL
(Colonial Affair), Shaun Bridgmohan, 115; ALOST (Fr) (Highest
Honor [Fr]), Tony Farina, 116; QUIET RULER (Woodman), Julian
Pimentel, 112; SAILAWAY (Our Emblem), Aaron Gryder, 114; and Dr.
Brendler.
ZAKOCITY (Precocity) and KISSIN SAINT (Kissin Kris) are both
on the also-eligibles list as main-track only contestants. The
former will have to carry 120 pounds, the latter has been
assigned 121.
