WINNING
WITH WORKOUTS

NOVEMBER 11

In this regular weekly feature, the Daily Clocker will present
examples from the Handicapper’s Report (HR) of how to use
workouts in your handicapping using actual results with horses
featured in our reports. To access the HR Daily Clocker Reports, click here.

The value of workout information with first time
starters

On November 3, at Churchill Downs in the 10TH race, all but
three of the two-year-old fillies were first-time starters. Only
one of the three to start had shown any talent. The crowd made
her the 3-5 favorite. She had a recent “OK” Grade B
work, hardly a reason to back a huge favorite on the win end.

Of the first timers, HR’s best worker was EXCUSE ME MISS (Arch)
with Grade B+ and Grade B drills. She won and paid $56. Our next
best worker was U. S. S. BOXER (Deputy Commander) with two Grade
B workouts. She ran second at 24-1 and the exacta paid $419.10
for $1. One of our other first time starters with OK workouts was
SISTER BAY (Acceptable), who ran third at 93-1. The trifecta paid
$12,209. Favorite ENDLESS DREAM (Tale of the Cat) ran fourth for
a $33,102.20 superfecta. The kind of race that makes a meet.

Nothing in the workout times recorded by these horses gave any
indication of their talent. As they say, you had to be there or
have gotten the info from someone who was there in the morning.
Note the :11.3 final eighth on EXCUSE ME MISS (below) within the
relatively slow :49 workout time. It’s also nice to see babies
outworking rivals in the morning, especially in a good barn where
you expect to see mostly decent horses.
