Sunset Stables’ RECORD (Devil His Due) moved through an opening through the
inside and held off all challengers en route to a neck tally in the $114,939
Derby Trial S. on the opening day at Churchill Downs on Saturday. The winner was
among a group of horses within a couple lengths of the lead for the opening
six furlongs of the race, which was recorded in 1:10 2/5. As the runners began
gearing up for the stretch run, Rafael Bejarano sent his mount between horses
near the inside and the talented colt did the rest from there, completing the
one-turn mile in 1:36 1/5 for Bob Baffert. Sent off at 5-1 odds, Record returned
$12.20, $6.40 and $4.20 while keying the $401.20 exacta, $2,570.20 trifecta and
$10,910 superfecta.

Spotsgone (Bright Launch) had a short lead turning for home and stubbornly
stayed on for a very good placing in here. The 54-1 longest shot on the board
was worth $27.20 and $8.60. Mister Triester (Old Trieste) closed from last to
garner the show, another 2 1/4 lengths back, paying $4.60 at 5-1.
Dawn of War (Catienus), who made a big move on the outside turning for home
before tiring, completed the super at 8-1 and was trailed by R Loyal Man (More
Than Ready) and 9-5 choice Noonmark (Unbridled’s Song).

New Awakening (Catienus) and Smokeyjonessutton (You and I) were withdrawn. Protagonus (Salt Lake)
broke down and was pulled up prior to the turn for home.

Record moved his mark to 5-2-2-1 with earnings of $123,343. This was the
dark bay colt’s stakes debut.

The winner was bred in the Bluegrass State by Mrs. Jo Williams and fetched a
bid of $130,000 at the 2004 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He was produced
from the winning Chimes Band mare Believe and has an unnamed yearling
full sister, as well as a 2006 unnamed half-sister by Include.
