As expected, Santa Anita Derby hero California Chrome was installed as the
5-2 morning-line favorite for Kentucky Derby 140 after drawing post position 5
in Wednesday’s Derby draw.

The Art Sherman-trained chestnut is one of only three on the morning-line
with single-digit odds. Hoppertunity, who was assigned post 11, is the 6-1
second pick while Wicked Strong, who will break from the far outside 20 post in
the auxiliary gate, is the third favorite at 8-1.

Mike Battaglia, the morning-line oddsmaker at Churchill Downs, indicated he
switched the odds on Hoppertunity and Wicked Strong once post positions were
drawn.

Hoppertunity, trained by Bob Baffert, is exiting a runner-up finish to
California Chrome in the Santa Anita Derby. The Any Given Saturday colt captured
the Rebel by a half-length prior to that in mid-March.

Wicked Strong was a nice 3 1/2-length victor of the Wood Memorial, which
catapulted him into the Derby for trainer Jimmy Jerkens. Before that, the best
the Hard Spun colt had finished in a stakes was third in last year’s Remsen.

Vicar’s In Trouble drew the 1 post under Rosie Napravnik, who is trying to
become the first female rider to win the Kentucky Derby, while Pablo del Monte
will need someone to scratch before 9 a.m. (EDT) on Friday to draw into the
field from the also-eligible list for trainer Wesley Ward.
