Joe Ragsdale’s Sarah Sis (Sharp Humor) withstood the late charge of Pangburn
(Congrats) to post a nose victory wire-to-wire victory in Saturday’s $200,000
Iowa
Oaks (G3), winning her second straight stakes race since being eased and
vanned off in the Kentucky Oaks (G1). The Ingrid Mason-trained filly was ridden
by Julio Felix.
A 1 3/4-length winner of the May 30 Panthers at Prairie, the three-year-old
dark bay appeared on her way to another comfortable tally when opening a
two-length advantage in midstretch. However, the action got very interesting
late as the wire came just in time for Sarah Sis, who prevailed as the 8-5
choice among eight rivals.
She established splits of :23 4/5, :48 and 1:12 4/5 en route to completing 1
1/16 miles in 1:45 on the fast track. Sarah Sis earned her second graded
triumph, taking the Honeybee (G3) at Oaklawn Park in early March, and the
Kentucky-bred also owns a pair of runner-up finishes in the Martha Washington
and Dixie Belle this season as well as a second in the Arlington-Washington
Lassie last year.
Pangburn, the 5-2 second choice, finished a half-length better than
Sweetgrass (Street Sense) in third. Next came Sweet Opportunity (Distorted
Humor), Sweet Success (Candy Ride), Hero on Saturday (Any Given Saturday), Paige
(Sky Mesa) and Magnolia Street (Include).
Bred in Kentucky by Catherine Rene White DVM, Sarah Sis is the lone stakes
winner out of Emerald Girl (Gilded Time). She initially sold for $10,000 as a
2013 Keeneland September yearling before being purchased for $20,000 as the OBS
June two-year-old in training sale. This is the female family of Grade 2-winning
millionaire Isitingood (Crusader Sword).
With the $119,400 winner’s share, Sarah Sis has now earned $379,400 from a
10-5-3-0 ledger.
