Fans crowd Saratoga to watch American Pharoah gallop;
Upstart confirmed for race
Approximately 15,000 fans were on hand at Saratoga Friday morning to watch
American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) gallop ahead of Saturday’s Travers S.
(G1). Though it was a gallop, the bay colt was timed by clockers who reported he
went the Travers’ distance of 1 1/4 miles in 2:24.
Friday also saw
Upstart (Flatter), Texas Red (Afleet Alex) and Smart Transition (Smart Strike)
take to the track. Trainer Richard Violette confirmed that Upset would start
in the Travers.
“He’s doing great. We’re going to run,” Violette said. “(American Pharoah)
looked great, but my horse is doing good, too, so we’re going to take a shot.”
Trainer Dale Romans, watching as his Travers contender Keen Ice (Curlin) took
a spin around Saratoga, listened as
Hall of Fame trainer LeRoy Jolley laid out his reasons why American Pharoah has
a tough task ahead in Travers.
