St Nicholas Abbey, a multiple English highweight and the 2011 Breeders’ Cup
Turf winner, sustained a serious injury Tuesday morning and efforts are being
made to save him for stud, according to reports from Coolmore Stud’s
Twitter feed. The
injury occurred at the Ballydoyle training center of Aidan O’Brien.
The six-year-old horse “suffered a fractured pastern during a routine piece
of work” and is scheduled for surgery Wednesday morning.
An earner of more than $7.8 million, St Nicholas Abbey opened 2013 with a
pair of outstanding Group 1 victories in the Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan and
the Coronation Cup at Royal Ascot, winning the latter for the third straight
year, and the international superstar was being readied for a possible tilt in
the Arlington Million on August 17.
St Nicholas Abbey captured the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs and
finished a close third in last year’s edition at Santa Anita. The eight-time
stakes winner is owned by the Coolmore connections of Michael Tabor, Mrs. John
Magnier and Derrick Smith.
