C. Zee, who tracked in third most of the way, edged past Pablo Del Monte for
second by a half-length. It was 2 1/2 lengths back to Long On Value in fourth.
He was followed under the wire by Spot, Tashier, Mighty Brown, Trail Blaze, and
Gambler’s Ghost.
Scratched from the Hutcheson was Vinceremos, who pulled off a 12-1 upset
earlier in the day in the Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs.
Wildcat Red, who has raced exclusively at Gulfstream, broke his maiden by
eight lengths on September 14 going 6 1/2 furlongs, and then beat allowance foes
the following month by 1 1/2 lengths at six furlongs. He finished first by 1 1/4
lengths in the $125,000 Juvenile Sprint on November 9, but was disqualified and
placed second after bearing out on a rival in the stretch.
Making his sophomore debut on New Year’s Day, in the $100,000 Gulfstream Park
Derby, Wildcat Red dueled throughout the one-mile test but fell a head short of
General A Rod at the finish. He’s now earned $235,850.
“(The February 22 Fountain of Youth) is the next step, hopefully, if
everything goes good,” said trainer Jose Garoffalo, who trains the colt for
Honors Stable Corporation. “We’re going to check the horse after the race, and
if everything goes in a good way, we’ll be there. Especially because I just read
that Cairo Prince is not going to go in the race. I probably am going to run in
that race if the horse is in good shape.
“If you look at his pedigree, he doesn’t show much stamina but the way he’s
training, the way he relaxes now, I think we could try him around two turns and
see what happens. I think when the pace is slower, he can go longer. He can
relax himself in the race, he proved that today.”
Produced by the Grade 3-placed Racene, a daughter of Miner’s Mark, Wildcat
Red is a half-brother to Racing Machine, a champion in Jamaica. Bred in Florida
by Moreau Bloodstock International and Winter Racing Enterprise, he was a
$30,000 OBS juvenile purchase.
