Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) winner Flameaway heads a list of 10 sophomores nominated late to the Triple Crown series of the Kentucky Derby (G1), Preakness Stakes (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1).
Joining the Mark Casse-trained Flameaway on the list (with trainers) are All Out Blitz (Simon Callaghan), Arawak (Doug O’Neill), Blended Citizen (O’Neill), Determinant (Casse), Gold Town (GB) (Charlie Appleby), Making a Marc (Louie Roussel III), Prince Lucky (Todd Pletcher), Runaway Ghost (Todd Fincher) and Yulong Warrior (Satish Seemar).
The group were made eligible with a late $6,000 fee that was due Monday. The late nomination period occurred January 21 through March.
There are now 370 horses eligible to participate in the Triple Crown races, pending late mail.
Three-year-olds not nominated to the Triple Crown during either the early or late nomination phases have a final opportunity to become eligible for the races through payment of a supplemental nomination fee due at the time of each race’s entry: the Kentucky Derby ($200,000), Preakness Stakes ($150,000) and Belmont Stakes ($50,000).
Supplemental nominees for the Kentucky Derby are treated the same as original nominees. If one or more supplemental nominees possess sufficient “Road to the Kentucky Derby” points to qualify for the Derby field, they will be allowed to start over original nominees that possess lesser qualifications.
