Caval looking to stay perfect in Sorrento

Last updated: 8/4/14 12:19 PM

Caval, who provided 2010 champion older male Blame with his first winner when
taking her debut at Santa Anita June 19, will break outside six rivals in
Wednesday’s Grade 2, $200,000
Sorrento at
Del Mar, a 6 1/2-furlong prelude to
the meet’s leading two-year-old filly fixture, the August 30 Del Mar Debutante.

The even-money favorite going five furlongs, Caval dueled for the lead before
opening up in the stretch to win by an emphatic 5 1/2 furlongs. One of two in
the Sorrento field trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, the $150,000 yearling purchase
is by Blame, who handed the mighty Zenyatta her only career defeat in the 2010
Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Hollendorfer also saddles Heart of Paradise, who won at first asking at Santa
Anita by 2 1/2 lengths in early June. However, the More Than Ready filly went
down to defeat by 2 3/4 lengths to returning rival La Grange in the $100,000
Cinderella at Los Alamitos last time. That race was a maiden-breaking
performance for La Grange, who finished second in her debut at Arlington in
early June.

World traveler Sunset Glow goes for trainer Wesley Ward in the Sorrento. The
Exchange Rate gray rebounded from a debut second at Presque Isle Downs to win a
five-furlong turf maiden over males at Belmont Park, and last time finished two
lengths second in the Albany Stakes, a Group 3 event at the prestigious Royal
Ascot meeting in England.

The Sorrento field also includes two other first-out winners: Conquest
Eclipse, a Churchill Downs graduate from the barn of Mark Casse, and Sharla Rae,
a come-from-behind scorer at Los Alamitos for Doug O’Neill.

The lone first-time starter in the lineup is Windy Forecast, a Stormy
Atlantic half-sister to Grade 3-placed stakes winners Tres Coronas and Descapate.
