Only two runners managed to earn triple-digit BRIS Speed ratings for the period of January 1-7, and one may join the Road to the Kentucky Derby in the near future.
Kathryn the Wise easily added a second stakes win to her resume, which now stands at 6-4-1-0, when romping by 10 3/4 lengths in the La Verdad Stakes at Aqueduct on January 5. That was enough for the lightly raced six-year-old mare by Uncle Mo to be awarded a 106 BRIS Speed figure.
Mihos, a newly turned sophomore by Cairo Prince, was trying stakes rivals for the first time in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park and just got up for the neck victory. The close score netted the Jimmy Jerkens pupil a 100 BRIS Speed rating as well as the attention of Derby watchers.
While not cracking the triple-digit barrier, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) fourth-place finisher Bellafina returned to her winning ways in the Santa Ynez Stakes (G2), a points race on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks. The Eclipse Award nominee garnered a 98 BRIS Speed number for her effortless 8 1/2-length triumph.
