PT and K Stable’s Shoot Craps earned a double distinction when graduating in
Sunday’s
1ST
race at Belmont Park: the juvenile established a new course record on the
Widener turf and also became the first winner sired by Grade 2 star Trappe Shot
(Tapit).
Dispatched as the 9-2 third choice off a debut third on the Churchill Downs
dirt, the Dane Kobiskie pupil argued with 3-2 favorite Show Bound (Warrior’s
Reward) and eventually emerged the stronger in midstretch. Then Rare Candy
(Twirling Candy) produced a late rally, but Shoot Craps still had three-quarters
of a length to spare at the wire. Under DeShawn Parker, Shoot Craps sped five
furlongs in :57.63.
Bred by Glencrest Farm in Kentucky, Shoot Craps first brought $47,000 as a
Keeneland November weanling before selling for $110,000 at the same venue the
following September. The dark bay is out of the Gone West mare Goldeni, from the
further family of English highweight Raven’s Pass (Elusive Quality), hero of the
2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic, and Grade 1 winner No Matter What (Nureyev), dam of
European champion filly Rainbow View (Dynaformer) and Grade 1 scorer Just as
Well (A.P. Indy), among others.
Trappe Shot, who commanded $850,000 as a two-year-old in training at Fasig-Tipton
Midlantic May, won four straight as a three-year-old. His streak culminating in
the 2010 Long Branch S., he was subsequently best of the rest behind two-time
champion Lookin at Lucky in the Haskell Invitational (G1).
In 2011, Trappe Shot stuck to sprinting. After an 8 1/2-length romp in the
True North H. (G2) and a score in his prep, the Waldoboro, he missed by a nose
in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. (G1). He retired at the end of the season with a
career mark of 12-6-2-0, $703,884.
Trappe Shot was bred by Hobeau Farm in Florida and hails from a distinguished
family. The chestnut is a half-brother to Grade 1-winning millionaire Miss Shop
(Deputy Minister); Grade 2-placed stakes victor Bought in Dixie (Dixieland
Band); Grade 2-placed Bulling (Holy Bull); and stakes heroine Shop Again (Wild
Again), dam of Grade 1 winner Power Broker (Pulpit) and stakes queen Fierce
Boots (Tiznow).
His dam, the winning Private Account mare Shopping, is in turn a half-sister
to multiple Grade 2 hero Lady Down (Spectacular Bid). Grade 1-winning sire
Mining (Mr. Prospector) is also close up in the family, while multiple Grade 1
victor and sire Wavering Monarch (Majestic Light) is at a further remove.
The eight-year-old Trappe Shot stands for a $10,000 fee, stands and nurses,
at Claiborne Farm near Paris, Kentucky.
