Pies Prospect ended Grand Slam II at Calder with an easy win
(Skip Smith)

Robert V. Lapenta’s PIES PROSPECT (Crafty Prospector) came back from two
disappointing efforts to win the $100,000
Fred W. Hooper H. (G3)
to end Calder’s Grand Slam II on Saturday.

The Nick Zito charge traveled just off the pace while Hear No Evil
(Carson City) set fractions of :23 3/5, :47 4/5 and 1:11
2/5.  Pies Prospect came up to run just behind Hear No Evil at the
third checkpoint and took over shortly thereafter, putting ground between
himself and the rest of the field en route to an 8 1/2-length victory. He
finished the 1
1/8-mile fast track contest in 1:50 3/5 under jockey Edgar Prado.

Leaving the gate at 3-1, Pies Prospect returned $8.40, $4.60 and $4.20 to his
backers and led the $76.80 exacta. Twilight Road (Cahill Road) passed Hear No
Evil in the closing strides for second, paying $9 and $7.40 at 9-1. Show gave
back $6 at 12-1, rounding out the $772.40 trifecta. The Judge Sez
Who (Judge T C) followed, ending the 4-8-7-5 superfecta that was worth $9,461.

Uncivil (Wild Again), Caiman (Malibu Moon), Gold Dollar (Seattle Slew), Super
Frolic (Pine Bluff), Dustys Birthday (Known Fact), Bob’s Proud Moment (Proud and
True) and 2-1 favorite A Huevo (Cool Joe) followed. Scooter Roach (Mi Cielo) was
scratched here but finished third in the W. L. McKnight H. (G2) in the prior race.

This victory improves Pies Prospect’s record to 15-5-1-2 with $500,865 in
earnings. He also owns wins in the Pegasus H. (G3) and Floor
Show H. from this year and placed in the Haskell Invitational H. (G1) and
Leonard Richards S. (G3).

The three-year-old chestnut is out of the winning Hot Pillow (Bates
Motel) and counts an unnamed weanling by With
Approval as a half-brother. Pies Prospect sold at the Keeneland September
Yearling sale for $190,000.
