Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) raised a record $2.8 million during
its 17th annual stallion season and art auction on Friday evening. Approximately
500 people attended the event, which was held for the first time at the
Keeneland Entertainment Center in Lexington, Kentucky. The record figure
represented a 47.4 percent jump from last year’s total of $1.9 million.
The gala honored Roy and Gretchen Jackson, the owners of Kentucky Derby (G1)
hero Barbaro, as well as the veterinary staff of the University of
Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center. Barbaro has remained in the care of the center
since shattering his right hind leg during the Preakness S. (G1) and then
developing life-threatening laminitis in his left hind hoof.
The TCA, which has been described as the “United Way” of the Thoroughbred
industry, raises money for the rescue, rehabilitation and retirement of
racehorses. In addition, TCA supports equine research and organizations that
help people who work with Thoroughbreds.
