WINNING WITH WORKOUTS

MARCH 3, 2005

In this regular weekly feature, Handicapper’s Report will present examples of
how to use workouts in your handicapping using actual results with horses
featured in our reports. To access the HR reports and to see the highlights of

Today’s Topic: Read the clocker’s comments carefully to catch the phrases
indicating a special “push” on a horse

Sometimes the grade given by a clocker can be supplemented by how he
describes the work and indicate what he feels about the horse’s chances in an
upcoming race. On February 20 in the 7TH race, RUSHIN’ TO ALTAR (Pulpit) had a
couple of nice Grade B+ workouts going into the race. He appeared to be in tough
against a couple of sharp horses, hadn’t shown too much in his last couple of
races and had been away since Del Mar.

However, in his January 19 workout, our clocker had noted that he “Continues
to train well in the morning…A nice drill and just waiting for him to show up in
the afternoon.” The key words “just waiting for him to show up in the afternoon”
were enough, coupled with an abundance of speed in the field, to trigger a nice
bet. He paid $19 to win going away.
