$950,000 Scat Daddy colt leads Day 2 at Keeneland

A colt from the final crop of the late Scat Daddy brought $950,000 from Kerri Radcliffe Bloodstock on Tuesday, leading the way on Day 2 of the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. One of the final yearlings through the ring at the Book 2 opener, Hip No. 506 was consigned by Gainesway, agent.

The March 5 Kentucky-bred is the first foal out of the stakes-placed Miss Lamour, a Mr. Greeley half-sister to multiple Grade 3-placed Tejida. Both were produced by the multiple Grade 3-winning Batique, a daughter of Storm Cat and the Grade 1-winning Serape. This is also the family of Group 1 scorer Hawkbill.

Bringing $900,000 from Shadwell Estate Company was a February 23 colt from the first crop of multiple Grade 2 winner Cairo Prince. Consigned by Brereton Jones/Airdrie Stud, agent, Hip 391 is a full brother to Grade 1 winner Sam's Sister.

Out of Kittery Point, by Include, the Kentucky-bred hails from the family of Grade 1 winners Sweet Talker, Include Me Out, and Check the Label.

Kerri Radcliffe Bloodstock, in partnership with Three Chimneys Farm, were the winning bidders at $850,000 for Hip 489, a gray March 20 colt from the second crop of Grade 1 winner Violence. The Kentucky-bred was offered by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency.

Produced by stakes winner Melody Lady, by Unbridled's Song, the colt is a full brother to the filly Buy Sell Hold, winner of the Kentucky Juvenile at Churchill Downs in May. Melody Lady is herself a daughter of multiple Grade 1 winner Lady Tak.

Shadwell was also the winning bidder, at $750,000, on Hip 342, an Into Mischief half-brother to stakes winner Harlan's Honor. Out of the stakes-placed Indian Rush, by Indian Charlie, Hip 342 was consigned by Paramount Sales, agent.

Also bringing $750,000 were the session's top two fillies. Bridlewood Farm obtained Hip 359, a Street Sense half-sister to Grade 1 winner Sweet Loretta. Offered by Ashview Farm (Bryan Lyster & Gary Lyster), agent, she's out of the stakes-placed Ithinkisawapudycat, a Bluegrass Cat half-sister to Canadian champion Spring in the Air.

Also going for $750,000 was Hip 400, a War Front half-sister to the multiple Group 2-placed War Envoy. Gaveled down to Cheveley Park Stud, the Taylor Made Sales Agency offering is out of the stakes-winning La Conseillante, by Elusive Quality, whose second dam was 1988 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner and champion Winning Colors.

On Tuesday, 194 yearlings sold for $48,221,000, an increase of 27 percent over last year's second session, which was in Book 1, that yielded receipts of $37,959,000 from the sale of 119 yearlings. The session average and median were down 22.1 percent and 31 percent, respectively, the mean declining from $318,983 to $248,562, and the median from $290,000 to $200,000.

However, the cumulative business after two days generally remained in positive territory. Overall, 289 yearlings have sold for $102,396,000, an increase of 41.3 percent at this point in 2016 when 227 head sold for $72,490,000. The average is up 11 percent, from $319,339 to $354,311, but the median has dipped 12.7 percent, from $290,000 to $255,000.

Book 2 continues Wednesday and Thursday with sessions beginning at 11 a.m. (EDT). After a dark day Friday, the sale continues daily through September 23 with sessions beginning at 10 a.m.
