Gary and Mary West's homebred Book Review showed no rust returning from a

five-month freshening in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000

A Gleam

Handicap at Hollywood Park, drawing off to a 2 1/2-length triumph. Rafael

Bejarano was up for trainer Bob Baffert.

Winner of the Grade 1 La Brea in late December, Book Review was making her

first appearance since a close second in the Santa Maria in mid-February. She

also took runner-up honors in the La Canada in January.

The four-year-old

daughter of Giant's Causeway produced additional victories in Charles Town Oaks

and Imperial Gesture last year and has now earned $784,955 from a 13-6-4-1 line.

The chestnut stalked the pace in fourth as Winding Ways and Teddy's Promise

dueled on the front end through splits of :22 2/5 and :45 1/5. Book Review

advanced into contention on the far turn and rallied three wide in the stretch

to collar Teddy's Promise, who forged her way to a short lead before

surrendering in the final sixteenth of a mile.

Book Review quickly strode clear to win going away under the wire, completing

seven furlongs in 1:22 3/5 on the Cushion Track.

"She likes to make one big run, so I just put her where she would feel

comfortable and by the three-eighths pole I decided to move in closer and start

to make my move," Bejarano said. "I knew she would come running at the end."

Off as the 3-1 third choice, Book Review paid $8.20, $3.40 and $2.20.

"She loves this distance and you know what helped is we had a couple of good

front runners. It set up well," assistant trainer Mike Marlow said. "(Bejarano)

rode her well. That was her first start on synthetic and that might have been

her best footing. I think she really liked it. I'd guess there would be

something for her at Del Mar."

The Grade 2 Rancho Bernardo Handicap, a 6 1/2-furlong event over Del Mar's

Polytrack on August 18, is a likely target.

Teddy's Promise saved the place by a head over the rallying Byrama. It

was another 1 1/4 lengths back to Rumor in fourth and Winding Way trailed under

the finish line. Conkate, Maker or Breaker and Reneesgotzip were all scratched.

A Kentucky-bred, Book Review is out of the unraced Distorted Humor mare

Clever Babe, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Irish Smoke. Grade 3 scorer Added

Elegance is the third maternal dam and she is responsible for Grade 2 queen

Added Gold and Grade 3 winner Added Asset.
