Hip No. 999, a Creative Cause filly consigned by Tom McCrocklin, agent, sold for $850,000 to Linda Rice, agent, to top the fourth and final session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s record breaking 2017 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training on Friday.
The Kentucky-bred filly is out of the stakes-winning El Prado mare Santina Dond and comes from the same female family as 2009 Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) victor Well Armed. The chestnut miss breezed a quarter in :21 during the April 21 under tack show.
Friday’s final session saw 143 juveniles sell for $13,152,200, a 6.1 percent decline over last year’s corresponding session when 165 horses brought $14,012,000. The average rose 8.3 percent, from $84,921 a year ago to $91,973 on Friday. The $52,000 median increased 4 percent over the $50,000 median recorded at the 2016 equivalent session.
The buyback percentage was 23.5 percent; it was 16.2 percent in 2016.
The overall sale topper came when John F. Moynihan, agent for M. V. Magnier, went to an OBS record of $2.45 million for Hip 793 on Thursday. The son of Tiznow was consigned by Bobby Dodd, agent, and blazed a co-fastest eighth in :9 3/5 at the June April 20 under tack show.
For the entire sale, 678 horses grossed a sale record $61,185,900, a jump of 17.6 percent when compared with 659 youngsters bringing $52,010,500 a year ago. The figure surpasses the previous mark of $56,965,000 set in 2014.
The average price also was a sale record, rising 14.3 percent from $78,923 a year ago to $90,245 for the 2017 stand. The old record of $79,068 was set in 2015. The median was a record $48,000, up 2.1 percent from the record of $47,000 set a year ago.
The buyback percentage was 17 percent; it was 22.7 percent a year ago.
