Bradley Thoroughbreds, Steve Laymon and Jerry & Ronald Frankel's Dayatthespa

was all out to hold a closing Regalo Mia in Sunday's Grade 3, $150,000

Herecomesthebride Stakes at Gulfstream Park. With Javier Castellano aboard,

the Chad Brown-trained daughter of City Zip was a neck clear on the wire while

finishing the nine-furlong, firm turf affair in 1:47 1/5.

"The plan was to sit second or third early in the race and it set up perfect

for her," Laymon said. "The big thing with her is she needs hard turf like it

was today. She didn't get that in the Breeders' Cup. It was too soft for her.

"If you look at her dam, her past performances don't show much, but she's a

full-sister to a Virginia Derby winner, Phi Beta Doc. We don't have any plans to

try her on dirt, but you might see her on Polytrack at Keeneland. We'll talk it

over with Chad (Brown)."

Frolic's Revenge shot to the front when the gates opened, but soon found

company in the form of Dayatthespa. The chestnut miss settled just to the

outside of Frolic's Revenge through a half in :24 and :48 3/5. Dayatthespa drew

closer to her rival's throatlatch as the pair passed through six furlongs in

1:12 3/5 and began to feel pressure from Wholelottashakin on the outside.

Frolic's Revenge faded in the lane, leaving the way clear for 4-5 favorite

Dayatthespa to take command. It wasn't a stroll to the wire, though, as Regalo

Mia continued the rally she began entering the turn to range up and challenge.

Dayatthespa dug in and held the Florida Oaks-placed runner, returning $3.80,

$3.20 and $2.40.

"She was acting up a little bit before the race, but as soon as she got by

the starting gate she completely calmed down and went about her business,"

Castellano said. "She broke so fast.  I thought before the race I would be

sitting third tracking the two horses that seemed to have speed, but after she

broke so fast I just settled her down right off the pace.

"She was very impressive today. It was her first time going a

mile-and-an-eighth and she did it beautifully. In the stretch she saw the other

horse coming and just ran on that much more."

Regalo Mia had 3 1/4 lengths to spare over Almusafa on the wire, but that one

was disqualified and placed sixth after coming out and impeding the path of

Northern Passion at the top of the stretch. That left Florida Oaks winner Dixie

Strike to take ownership of third, with Wholelottashakin following in fourth.

Northern Passion, elevated to sixth following Almusafa's disqualification, was

followed under the line by Frolic's Revenge and Ann of the Dance.

Wait Til

Dawn was entered as main-track only, but didn't wait around to see if the race

would be moved from the turf, instead running in and winning Saturday's Suncoast

Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs.

Dayatthespa entered the Herecomesthebride off a nice win in the Sweetest

Chant Stakes while making her sophomore bow on January 22. A four-length maiden

debut scorer at Saratoga last August, the filly was shipped north to Woodbine

and wound up second to Northern Passion in the Grade 3 Natalma Stakes. A tiring

ninth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Fillies to close out her two-year-old

campaign, Dayatthespa has now accumulated $214,892 with Sunday's victory and

boasts a 5-3-1-0 career mark.

Bred in New York by Castellare Dicracchiolo Stable, Cracchiolo and Goldsher,

Dayatthespa has more than earned back her $50,000 purchase price as a

Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-bred Preferred yearling. She is the first stakes

winner out of the Doc's Leader mare M'lady Doc, who is a full sister to Grade 3

victor Phi Beta Doc and a half-sibling to listed winner Queen Mary's Boy.

This female family is also responsible for producing Clev Er Tell, hero of

the Grade 2 Arkansas Derby and Grade 2 Louisiana Derby in 1977, as well as

Japanese champion sprinter Hat Trick and his dam, Grade 2 heroine Tricky Code.
