Darley Stable's homebred ETCHED (Forestry) won the battle of the

comebackers in Sunday's $72,750

Formal Gold S. at Monmouth Park. Sidelined since his subpar 13th in

the November 27 Clark H. (G2), the Kiaran McLaughlin charge wore down

Chirac (Sligo Bay [Ire]), who was returning from a layoff of more than a

year himself, to score by a length. Etched, the 3-5 favorite, returned

$3.20 and $2.10. There was no show wagering on the four-horse race.

Breaking from the rail, Etched was adroitly maneuvered off the fence

and into an outside, pace-pressing role by Alan Garcia. Chirac, last

seen romping by 6 3/4 lengths in the Philip H. Iselin S. (G3) here in

August 2009, attempted to duplicate those front-running heroics. He

reeled off fractions of :24 1/5 and :48 2/5, but felt ever more pressure

from Etched, who put his head in front through six furlongs in 1:12 4/5.

The early leader wasn't about to yield so readily, though. Chirac

battled back turning into the stretch, and the two engaged in a duel for

most of the drive. Etched kept finding more and ultimately subdued a

game Chirac late, inching clear to finish 1 1/16 miles on the sloppy,

sealed track in 1:45.

Chirac paid $2.60 as the 2-1 second choice, and concluded the $7.60

exacta (1-3), after finishing 5 1/4 lengths ahead of Sir Whimsey (Jump

Start). Secret Getaway (Skip Away), who bobbled at the break, trailed

throughout. Primary Witness (Hennessy) was scratched.

"I knew I had the leader (Chirac) anytime I wanted," Garcia said. "I was

worried about Sir Whimsey coming after us, but at the quarter-pole I looked back

and he wasn't coming. He's come back great. I was real impressed with him."

The five-year-old Etched, who advanced his mark to 8-6-0-0, $407,586, first

burst onto the scene during his unbeaten juvenile season in 2007. A 6 3/4-length

debut winner, the chestnut captured the Nashua S. (G3) by 6 1/2 lengths in his

subsequent outing for McLaughlin and earned a promotion to the Godolphin

operation. Etched was shipped to Dubai, but failed to sparkle in his only start

for Saeed bin Suroor, finishing fourth in the 2008 U.A.E. Two Thousand Guineas

(UAE-G3). He resurfaced with McLaughlin nine months later and got back on the

winning track with a half-length score in an allowance/optional claiming event

at Aqueduct.

Shelved for another nine months, Etched made a belated return at the 2009

Saratoga meet, winning an allowance/optional claimer. That served as a perfect

prep for the Meadowlands Cup (G2) in October, which he garnered by a hard-fought

neck. Etched made his third start off the layoff in the aforementioned Clark,

where he was involved in the early pace before giving way badly.

In light of his Meadowlands Cup victory, Etched looms as a logical candidate

for the replacement event, the $300,000 Monmouth Cup (G2) on October 9.

The Kentucky-bred Etched is the only foal to race so far out of 2001 Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1)

winner Unbridled Elaine (Unbridled's Song), who earned $1,770,740 from an

11-6-2-1 career line. Unbridled Elaine is a half-sister to Grade 1 heroine and

$1.2 million earner Glitter Woman (Glitterman), the dam of 2007 Suburban H. (G1)

winner Political Force (Unbridled's Song). She is also a half-sister to

Gwenjinsky (Cape Town), the dam of multiple Grade 2 queen Lead Story (Editor's

Note) and stakes victor Capejinsky (Cape Town).

Unbridled Elaine's most recent offspring are a juvenile colt named Blunt

(Distorted Humor), an unnamed yearling colt by Discreet Cat and a 2010 colt by

Distorted Humor.
